The Medicine Man

One of the first stops on my three month solo adventure was to see this incredible man, Nyoman. Nyoman is Ketut Liyer’s son. Ketut, also known as the “medicine man” from Eat Pray Love, taught Nyoman everything he knew and passed down generations worth of wisdom to him.

I was fortunate enough to not only have a palm reading from Nyoman, but he also conducted a traditional Balinese Purification Healing. Nyoman said prayers for me, blessed me with sacred water from the holy temple and gifted me a tri-coloured “Tridatu” bracelet, which if translated would mean - three powers. Almost comparable to the holy trinity, Tridatu embodies the Balinese-Hindu’s three manifestations of God otherwise known as the Trimurti. Brahma, The Creator is represented in red; Siwa The Destroyer in white, and Wisnu The Preserver in black. Trimurti permeates through the core aspects of the Balinese-Hindu’s circle of life (birth, life, and death); captured by the three entities who hold the power or ‘duty’ of creation, welfare, and destruction for each stage of the life cycle. He told me that this blessing and bracelet would protect me for a year, and that I must go back, with my future husband (of course) next year. Not a worry, Nyoman - it would be my honour!

The whole experience was remarkable and I left glowing with a sense of peace and optimism for what my journey ahead, aka life.

My Palm Reading for those who are curious…

  • I would live to be 90+ and would remain generally healthy for the duration

  • It is very important that I practice Kundalini yoga regularly, which was kismet as this is what I have been draw to and was a MUST on my ravel list

  • I am very lucky in this life, and will always have more money than I need

  • Very smart and will be very successful in my career

  • He said it was nice to have a holiday, but not for too long for me as it will have to opposite effect and will stress me more than it will relax me (got it in one! should have listened to that one)

  • Two kiddies (fingers and toes crossed for this)

  • I am to keep smiling and soon I will love again, but this time for a very, very long time (HOORAY - anyone know where this mystery man is?)

  • And a few other things, but ill keep those safe in my journal for now..

Nyoman shared a simple yet powerful daily practice with me that I will share with you too…

  • Begin by lighting an incense stick and finding a comfortable, quiet seat.

  • Move your hand to prayer and place the incense between your fingers.

  • Bring your thumbs to your heart, close your eyes and begin to focus your attention on your breath.

  • Grounding into your breath, allow it to calm your nervous system during the process.

  • Offer a prayer or gratitude to the Universe and set an intention for the day ahead.

  • Hold that energy in your heart as you breathe deeply and sit in the high vibrational energy of love and gratitude.

  • After 5-10 minutes, mindfully place the incense on your alter or in a stand and begin your day.

If any of you have seen ‘The Medicine Man” too, I would love to hear how your experience was! Send me a DM so we can compare notes!

Until next time.

With love,

Brearna x
